Africa covers about 30.4 million km² between the Atlantic and Indian oceans, with the Mediterranean to the north and the Red Sea to the north-east. Its position links Europe, the Middle East and the sea routes of the Southern Hemisphere.
Cairo, Lagos, Kinshasa, Johannesburg and Nairobi are among its major urban centres. The continent matters globally for its young population, cultural and biological diversity, resources and role in international trade. The Maghreb, the Sahel, the Gulf of Guinea, East Africa and Southern Africa are connected by historic routes, migration, languages, music and faiths.
